In the United States, April is National Poetry Month. Bloggers, as is our wont, have appropriated this event for own puposes, and celebrate it as National Poetry Writing Month, or NaPoWriMo (adapted from National Novel Writing Month, NaNoWriMo.) Participants commit to write a poem every day for the month of April. Many of these efforts are posted; some are quickly hidden away. Here at Watermark, I’ve commited to posting a poetry- related post every day. Some of those may be my daily poem.
Our Blogging Poet Leader for this annual event is Maureen at SQUASH BLOSSOM! In past years, most of the action has been collected at Maureen’s blog. This year, there is participation all over the place — and so, confronted with the question of where to link my buttons, I decided to make a page just for this. I made my own button, that black & white one up top. [Want it? Just right-click, save to your own computer, then upload to your site.]
UPDATE: No fooling: Write a poem a day in April!
Robert Lee Brewer at Writer’s Digest has also posted an April challenge:
. . . the purpose of this post is to prepare you for a wild and crazy
April poetry challenge. As you probably know, April is National Poetry
Month and to celebrate I decided to challenge myself to writing a poem
each day–not worrying about quality as much (that’s why revision was
invented) as getting some first draft material to work with. And I want
to encourage you to join me.
To help you out, I’ve been preparing a series of poetry prompts for
each day of the month of April. In fact, I’m even thinking I’ll do a
“Two for Tuesday” poetry prompt each week as well.Anyone who writes a poem a day and posts that poem in
the comments of each prompt will get something of value from yours
truly over the summer.
This page will change during the month. I’ll add new sites and participants as I find them, and I’ll post the NaPoWriMo blogroll, too — just a little linklove. We poets need all the linklove we can get.
At the bottom, I’ll put the Official Poets.Org info — lots to read, do, play with!
