It never goes away, this feeling, wanting
something I cannot have. Fires burn
on Lolo Peak. Helicopters come to dip
water from the Clark Fork, carry it
to the flames.
Black smoke darkens this summer sky.
I sleep through the long afternoons.
Even in dreams, you are not here.
The dogs pace, restless, barking
at nothing.
