Homunculus

I am having a terrible time with this prompt. I have three responses so far. The first is all feeling, no form. The second is boring. The third is all form, no feeling.

I'm working on a fourth. In the meantime, though, I post #3:

I think I am. It seems a reasonable
formulation. If I am not, then who
is thinking? Perhaps it's possible
that I am merely a fragment of you.

Then who are you? one asks. But who is one?
One may be many, a crowd, a multitude.
I try to count the many me's, the sum
of all I am. It seems an attitude

of skepticism is advisable.
I think I can, I think I can, I think
the paradox is not resolvable.
I think I can't. I think and then I sink

into paralysis, and think I'm not
at all. A particle, a speck, a thought.

  1. I love your tenacity with this prompt, and I like this poem! I haven’t read the others yet because they came in after my reading spree last week — and because you were stuck in our spam filter then. 🙁
I am off to read them now.

  2. Less tenacity than stubbornness, I suspect.
