IBS & migraine, depression, fibromyalgia

From Reuters:

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – The findings from a large study indicate
that patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are at increased risk
for migraine, depression or fibromyalgia, a chronic condition of
fatigue, muscle pain and other symptoms . . .

The current study, published in BMC Gastroenterology, involved more
than 125,000 subjects and did include a reference group. The subjects
were drawn from a large U.S. health plan and were seen for either IBS
or routine medical care (the non-IBS group).

Compared with non-IBS patients, those with the condition were 60
percent more likely to also have any one of the three disorders, the
report indicates. The elevated risks for depression, migraine, and
fibromyalgia were 40 percent, 60 percent, and 80 percent, respectively.

The
current findings support previous reports, which have promoted
speculation that all four disorders share an underlying biological
mechanism, the authors conclude.

Emphasis mine. Photo mine, and meant to be cheering.

I was diagnosed with colitis when I was in my twenties, and there is no doubt that when this acts up, all of my symptoms are worse. Much worse.

Anyone surprised by the results of this study?

There is a book called something like “The Second Brain” that is written by a doctor and argues that the network of neural tissue that makes a tube wound through the intestines, in the wall, is evolved from the same tissue in the original zygote as develops into the brain. In fact, evolution-wise, the brain evolved from the gut and the need to regulate what the gut does. Therefore, they are governed by the same molecules: serotonin and so on. That’s why emotion hits both the gut and the mind — doesn’t matter which one starts it, the other one is dragged into it. Therefore, meditation is an aid to digestion and right food will help you think.

The doctor is a lively writer, which doesn’t help him among the somber-sided sorts of physicians but it makes his book worth reading.

One of the sure signs of a flare coming is frequent visits to toilet-ie IBS like symptoms is in town.

If you have any of these horrible things that affect your life, won’t it be more likely that you have depression too??

I have Fibro and it effects every muscle in my body. The gut is moved by an internal muscular system, so I’ve always thought it stands to reason that Fibro seriously effects my IBS. The odd part is that my IBS seems to effect my Fibro just as much. I’m glad the relation between these types of problems are being further researched.

My son has been showing severe IBS symptoms
and is currently being tested to rule out everything else. We have only been living with it for a short time and it has been a nightmare so I can see where depression can set in.
