Ghost Maps

has been short-listed for the League of Canadian Poets’ Pat Lowther Memorial Award, given for a book of poems written by a woman and published in the preceding year.

The judges’ citation reads:

In Erin Noteboom’s Ghost Maps: Poems For Carl Hruska, the life of a WWII veteran is movingly rendered in a sequence of spare, vivid poems. Crossing boundaries between genres, Noteboom employs dialogue and smooth shifts in perspective to create a fictionalized biography in verse. With echoing imagery and endings both understated and reaching, Ghost Maps unfolds with unerring grace.

Please do not assume that I am the speaker/ subject of my poems.

In these times of creative nonfiction and fictionalized memoirs, I think of the poem itself as true fiction: it is most likely not factual, but it must be true.

It is likely to be — it is best if it is — a truth I did not know before I wrote, and may not understand even then.

A poem is my way of discovering (dis-covering) what I feel; sometimes, what I think — but it is not necessarily biographical.
